The king crab is remarkable for its size and is distinguished by its taste for icy waters. It is found in Norway, where it has proliferated in recent decades, to the delight of fishermen and tourists.
You have to pass one of the last pieces of land before the North Pole and venture into the dark and frigid waters of the Arctic to meet the king crab, a voracious and invasive creature. The largest crustacean in the world can weigh up to 15kg and reach two meters in wingspan. This species has been proliferating in northern Norway for around thirty years, attracting fishermen and more and more tourists for extraordinary safaris.
For this adventure, the price is 150 euros per person. Four French Erasmus exchange students have decided to try the adventure. “It’s amazing, I think it’s a dream. The cold is quite bearable, the hands are starting to freeze a little but, frankly, it’s fine”assures one of them. The fisherman leads them to where he set up traps two days earlier. “We put in some cod as bait”he says. The reward comes within minutes, when a dozen king crabs approach. However, when introduced to Norway by Russian scientists in the 1960s, this crab was seen as a curse, because it eats so many available fish.
