Mobilization in Montreal for more social housing

A few hundred people demonstrated on Saturday afternoon to demand that Quebec maintain the AccèsLogis program and additional investments for the construction of social housing.

Demonstrators from several regions of the province first gathered around 1:30 p.m. in a public square in Chinatown at the initiative of the Popular Action Front in Urban Redevelopment (FRAPRU). They then marched on various downtown arteries, including René-Lévesque Boulevard and Jeanne-Mance Street.

Protesters of all ages, who are holding up colorful posters denouncing the lack of affordable housing for low- and middle-income people, were marching around 2:30 p.m. in Old Montreal. They will end their journey in front of the Montreal offices of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

In an interview with Le Devoir, FRAPRU spokesperson Véronique Laflamme notably deplored that the Legault government preferred to allocate $3.2 billion in its latest budget to give a refundable tax credit of $500 to more than $6 million. Quebecers, while social housing harvests “peanuts”, according to her.
