“The extreme weather allowed us to recover only one body,” she added on Twitter.

Among those who survived an operation that lasted five hours are children, said SOS Méditerranée, whose headquarters are in Marseille (South).

On Thursday, the ambulance ship, co-chartered with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), had already rescued thirty people, who had managed to “flee Libya before ending up at sea with a strong swell”.

The central Mediterranean is the most dangerous migration route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The UN agency estimates the number of dead and missing since 2014 at more than 23,500, including 2,048 last year.
