Amazon is giving up its warehouse project in Petit-Couronne (Seine-Maritime), near Rouen, learned France Bleu Normandie. The mayor of the town, Joël Bigot, announced it, Thursday, March 24 in the municipal council, after having received a letter from Gazeley, the company responsible for fitting out the warehouse, informing him of a request for withdrawal from the building permit, specifies France Bleu Normandie.
Amazon planned to set up a high-capacity e-commerce storage warehouse in Petit-Couronne, on the former site of a refinery. The prefecture of Seine-Maritime had signed in March 2021 the necessary decrees authorizing this construction.
Amazon’s decision to abandon the project comes as a surprise to the mayor of Petit-Couronne. He supported this project which represented nearly 2,000 job creations, according to France Bleu Normandie.
Amazon’s project faced a lot of opposition. The Stop Amazon 76 association, supported by France Nature Environnement and Friends of the Earth, had notably filed appeals to have the building permit canceled. In December 2021, Mediapart published an investigation denouncing shortcomings in the cleanup of the former oil site.
