In 2021, women earn on average 16.5% less than men, and the pandemic has accentuated this gap, which has been denounced for a long time.
“For equal work, equal pay”: the slogan is old but the fight is still current. The pay gap between men and women widened further in 2021. The main cause of these gaps: poorly paid part-time jobs or lower paid sectors, mostly occupied by women.
Another source of inequality is motherhood. “We realize that at the start of a career, there is no real pay gap between women and men for equal positions”, explains Rebecca Amsellem, economist and founder of the Les Glorieuses association. “These inequalities widen and do not close from the age of 30 or 31, which is the average age of the first child in France.” Corporate responsibility is singled out. Among the solutions proposed: to award public contracts only to virtuous companies in this area or to upgrade very feminine sectors.
