Popovich joined Don Nelson at the height of NBA history when his Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 117-110. Of note, Popovich served as Nelson’s backup for the Golden State Warriors in the early 1990s.

Spurs had lost their last four games, leaving their coach nicknamed “Coach Pop” just one win away from the record. It’s now done.

Popovich is in his 26and season at the helm of an NBA team and he will have the opportunity to set a new winning record on Wednesday in San Antonio when the Spurs host the Toronto Raptors.

The 73-year-old won five NBA championships with Spurs in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014.
