On Sunday, the G7 countries – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the United States – warned that they would take “further measures” on top of the sanctions already announced if Russia did not stop its military operations. The head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, assured that all members of the G7 were “fully aligned” against the Russian attack.
Also on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he was putting the Russian military’s “deterrent force” on alert, which may include a nuclear component, an escalation that Washington called “totally unacceptable”.
Russia has become an international pariah since its army set out to invade Ukraine last Thursday. It faces a barrage of sanctions, including bans from western airspace and major financial networks.
On Monday, at 3 p.m. GMT, the United Nations General Assembly opens, which will begin debating a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
