Here is Basia Bulat’s musical confinement project: invite orchestrators Owen Pallett, Paul Frith and Zou Zou Robidoux to revisit his work – his garden, to allude to the title -, let them be inspired by his tender songs and his voice. to melt the snowbanks to imagine them 16 new cases of strings and harp. The maneuver, which highlights the writing and melodic flair of the Montrealer, also has the merit of giving new life to the beautiful songs of her latest album, Are You in Love?, published two years ago, at the dawn of a global pandemic and who will never have fully lived his life in front of an audience. From this disc on which the folk musician took a convincing step in the direction of rock, Fables and Already Forgiven shine, the fine arrangements make the first soar, those more embodied enhance the vocal interpretation of the second, Bulat having also re-recorded his words. On the other hand, the epic Love Is at the End of the World struggles to find, despite the insistent staccatos, the strength of the original rock rhythm.
