The state of waterways in Charente-Maritime

The gloom is in order at the moment among fishermen, it is not only due to fishing conditions. The Covid, the rain which is announced and which does not arrive, rivers with levels too low for the season. Bruno Garcia of the Charente-Maritime fishing federation, however, finds reasons to be positive.
Bruno Garcia: there is always a way to be positive and especially when fishing in Charente-Maritime. It’s true our rivers are not at their best and we are impatiently awaiting this flood whose virtues are indisputable.

France Bleu la Rochelle: Remind us of the benefits of a flood

A self-cleaning of watercourses, the filling of groundwater which should allow us to cope with the enormous quantity of water consumed by agriculture from the spring, let’s not forget the drinking water needs during the period summer and currently and I am going to speak of urgency: the reproduction of the pike for which a submersion of the meadows is essential, therefore a flood.

So the way to be positive?

First, to counteract my humorous touch earlier, our waterways aren’t that ugly. The channels are doing well. Since we reason on a volume of water and not on a flow like a river. They are now at normal levels and especially if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the waterways, you have the bodies of water and in Charente-Maritime you are spoiled. This is not what is missing, there is not on our territory a canton on our territory without 2 or 3 bodies of water.

Water bodies where you are sure to find fish

Of course ! we know that fishing associations regularly dump fish there: roach, carp, pike, zander, black bass… I announced it last week, next weekend rainbow trout releases on some shots of water from the department before the opening. And what should not be forgotten is that the body of water is an enclosed environment. Which means the fish is trapped there, it can’t escape. The fish that are dumped there stay on the site, that’s why we can be sure to find fish there.

As tradition dictates, the little regulatory reminder?

On almost all of these bodies of water with the exception of those that are private, I would say to be clearer, private-private where access is not “public”, the fishing license is compulsory.
