Just like his master, man’s best friend unfortunately does not last forever. Two veterinarians offer a few ways to better care for your dog during the autumn of his life.
A dog’s first signs of old age normally appear around the age of 12. Osteoporosis, especially in the hips for large breeds, is one of them. This disease results in a degeneration of the cartilage which causes inflammation and pain. Hearing loss and the appearance of cataracts ensue.
Both vets recommend being on the lookout for routine changes. “Some dogs, for example, want to shorten the walk and return home, or have difficulty getting up in the morning,” says Charles Morin, veterinarian and founder of the Basses-Laurentides veterinary clinic.
Cognitive syndrome, characterized by dementia and loss of mental functions, is also common. Affected dogs frequently suffer from sleep cycle disturbances. “They walk around unexpectedly at night, or sleep all the time. They can also wake up confused, ”describes Charles Morin. This confusion is often accompanied by uncleanliness, that is, when the pet goes to relieve itself inside.
Psychologically, it is still difficult to detect symptoms of depression in dogs. Antidepressants are mostly prescribed to younger dogs who suffer from separation anxiety.
In the eyes of veterinarian Caroline Picard, who practices at the Ontario Street Veterinary Clinic Inc., it is important to make the distinction between aging and disease. “Old age is not a disease, it is inevitable in all living beings. That said, what is attributed to old age can turn out to be a serious illness that can be cured. This is why it is necessary to consult in case of doubt in order to ensure a longer life for your dog, ”she explains.
The promise of CBD
More and more scientific studies show that cannabis could relieve dogs at the end of life, especially the symptoms caused by osteoarthritis. However, Health Canada and the Order of Veterinary Physicians of Quebec are still studying the ideal dosage for animals. While some doctors offer CBD-based supplements, Doctors Picard and Morin do not yet feel comfortable prescribing it to their canine patients. They prefer to wait for a clear standardization from the authorities.
“The dosage of CBD is tricky. This can have different effects depending on the breed of dog,” explains Caroline Picard. ” It’s a question of time. Within five years, a Canadian company will most likely be able to approve part of the molecule and distribute it directly here,” said Charles Morin.
In the absence of the magic herb, one can offer nutrient-enriched food such as omega-3, New Zealand green mussel, which contains glucosamine, turmeric for inflammation, as well as the broth of marrow and collagen to support the joints.
Alternative medicine
Various alternative medicines such as osteopathy, acupuncture and hydrotherapy are now available to man’s best friends. That said, before using such services, one must ensure that the specialists are qualified doctors who are part of the Association of Veterinarians in Alternative and Complementary Medicine. You can also consult such a directory on the organization’s website.
For example, the Laval physiotherapy center offers a swimming pool for dogs. Most swimmers are in postoperative recovery. However, it is a great activity to offer to our animal who struggles to exercise, because the low impact in the water reduces the pain experienced.
At his clinic, Charles Morin uses a therapeutic laser that helps relieve sore joints in elderly patients. He is also experimenting with a chondroprotective drug injected monthly under the skin. Studies on this treatment are still rare, but the first trials offer conclusive results in terms of cartilage protection.
