The government is raising its voice. The Minister Delegate for the Autonomy of the Elderly, Brigitte Bourguignon, summoned the Director General of Orpea, Jean-Christophe Romersi, on February 1 to “to respond” to “serious accusations” concerning the practices of the group in its Ehpad, denounced in a book which caused a shock wave.

Since the publication Monday in the daily The world excerpts from the book The Gravediggers of the journalist Victor Castanet, the indignant declarations follow one another. “The revelations made in this book are absolutely revolting, you will have your stomach knotted by reading such things. And if these facts are proven, they will obviously have to be sanctioned with the greatest severity”, said government spokesman Gabriel Attal after the Council of Ministers on Wednesday 26 January.

The book, released on Wednesday, describes a system where hygiene care, medical care, and even residents’ meals are “rationed” to improve the profitability of the group of private nursing homes. And this while stays are charged at full price.
