Exploring the Thrill of Ice Canoeing in Montreal
In the vibrant city of Montreal, journalist Louis-Philippe Messier is always on the go, his office packed into a backpack as he seeks out captivating stories and intriguing individuals. His curiosity knows no bounds as he engages with people from all walks of life, contributing to the rich tapestry of urban life.
A Family-Friendly Adventure Awaits
Ice canoeing has traditionally been viewed as an extreme sport, accessible only to seasoned athletes. However, this unique winter activity has now opened its doors to adventurers of all ages, from 7 to 77. The shift began six years ago with the founding of Ice Canoe Experience, a local company based in Quebec.
Julien Harvey, the founder, embodies the spirit of an ice canoeist. Hailing from Île-aux-Coudres, he comes from a lineage of canoe enthusiasts, with both his father and grandfather participating in the sport. “I started this company to transform ice canoeing into a family-friendly activity,” shares the 38-year-old entrepreneur. All operations are conducted near Quebec, as the strong currents in Montreal make the experience more challenging.
Having previously participated in a competitive ice canoeing team, I can attest that it was an exhilarating experience. We charged over icy mounds like modern-day Vikings, leaving me thoroughly exhausted. However, nothing could compare to the tranquil family adventure I enjoyed last Sunday with my almost 9-year-old son, Gustave, under the guidance of Mr. Harvey.
During the recent school break, Ice Canoe Experience introduced a “family package.” Young children can join as passengers, while older kids like my son are equipped with neoprene bottoms and metal spikes, just like the adults. “Would you like to venture to the middle of the river to find an ice island to explore?” the guide asked. Gustave eagerly responded with a “yes” and hopped aboard.
As we paddled, a massive cruise ship glided by on the opposite bank. Gustave struggled a bit to maintain the pace in a boat that wasn’t quite built for his small stature, but he managed admirably.
Once we reached a mini-iceberg, we took a break for snacks and hot chocolate. For our group photos, we were encouraged to say “ice” for a cheerful snapshot. “Look, Dad, we’re moving!” exclaimed my son as he spotted the port of Quebec drifting by.
Like seals, we let the current carry us. Kneeling inside the canoe, we gripped a metal crossbar and a handle, with one leg hanging out as we pushed. This playful maneuver is known as “doing the scooter.” When it was time to paddle, we settled on the rowing benches while the pilot skillfully navigated from the back.
“Dad, will we be able to come back?” my son asked, filled with excitement. He could have spent hours collecting pieces of ice and playfully smashing them. However, since the goal of our ice canoeing adventure was to soak in the stunning scenery from the heart of the river, the intense competitive aspect was replaced with a serene experience.
Interestingly, the oldest participant with Ice Canoe Experience was an impressive 85 years old. Who knows who will break that record next?
