GNTM Director Under Fire: ‘A Highly Polarizing Show’

Heidi Klum addresses past accusations of manipulation on ‘Germany’s Next Topmodel,’ asserting that the show is unscripted and genuine. As an executive producer since 2007, she emphasizes her commitment to promoting diversity and wellness in modeling, challenging conventional standards. Klum acknowledges the difficulties contestants face but highlights that few have expressed negative experiences. Additionally, she shares her approach to parenting, balancing strict rules with the encouragement of independence in her children.

Heidi Klum Responds to Accusations and Emphasizes Transparency

In May 2022, Lijana Kaggwa, a former contestant of ‘Germany’s Next Topmodel,’ made serious allegations against Heidi Klum and the show’s production team, claiming manipulation throughout the competition. This sparked a wave of support from other former contestants. Fast forward to February 2023, and Klum found herself addressing these accusations directly at the launch of the 18th season, stating, “We are a reality show, and we show exactly what happens. There is no script, and there is no storyline. Everything the models do and say is solely their decision.”

Klum Advocates for Diversity and Wellness in Modeling

In an interview with ‘Stern’ in February 2025, just before the GNTM anniversary season, Klum elaborated on her role in shaping the show’s content since its second season in 2007. She revealed that she has been intricately involved as an executive producer, asserting, “I am still involved in every little part of the process today.” This includes moving away from scripted moderation that may have portrayed a more severe image of her.

Heidi Klum has also made significant strides towards promoting a healthier and more diverse modeling environment. Since 2021, she has worked to dismantle traditional barriers regarding age, body measurements, and gender, declaring, “I love diversity and will continue to fight for diversity with all my strength.” Despite her efforts, she acknowledges the challenges faced by her candidates in the competitive modeling industry, noting that many do not receive casting invitations.

Addressing the manipulation claims, Klum stated that while some former contestants reported feeling misrepresented, she is not surprised by their experiences. “Our candidates are people and thus different beings,” she remarked. Klum emphasized that in her nearly two decades of experience, only a handful of former contestants have spoken negatively about their time on the show.

As a devoted mother, Klum likens her parenting style to that of a ‘helicopter mom,’ sharing that she imposes strict rules for her children while allowing them certain freedoms. While they are allowed to attend parties, there are clear guidelines in place. Klum acknowledges her cautious approach, noting, “I am also learning that my children have grown older.” Her youngest daughter, Lou, is already planning for an exchange year in Japan, showcasing the independence Klum encourages while maintaining family values.
