Dry Dog Food Review: Achieving a Grade of 6 on Three Occasions, Including a Popular Brand

A detailed evaluation of 25 dry dog foods for adults, including two organic options, was conducted by experts from a university animal nutrition institute for the November 2024 edition of ÖKO-TEST. Six foods received ‘very good’ ratings, highlighting their nutritional quality, while three were deemed ‘insufficient’ due to high mineral levels. The top-rated product was 4Paws Sunny Hills Premium Softchunks Chicken, available at various retailers. The testing process involved rigorous analysis of nutrient levels and compliance with safety standards.

When it comes to your furry companion, only the highest quality food will do. It’s essential that their meals are not just tasty, but also nutritious, digestible, and devoid of harmful substances. The nutritional profile of the food plays a crucial role in their overall health.

To ensure the best options are available, an expert from a university animal nutrition institute meticulously evaluated various data points, including protein, minerals, vitamins, and more. For the November 2024 edition of ÖKO-TEST, a comprehensive assessment of 25 dry dog foods designed for adult dogs was conducted, which included two organic varieties.

Note: During the product selection, the testers favored items labeled as vegan or vegetarian. In the absence of plant-based options, they opted for products featuring chicken or poultry flavors. The experts preferred traditional formulations over grain-free ones and selected standard foods rather than premium options whenever feasible. All the tested products were labeled as complete food, ensuring they can meet your dog’s energy and nutritional requirements without the need for additional meals.

Top Contenders in Dry Dog Food

The results revealed six dry foods rated as ‘very good’. Eleven were categorized as ‘good’, including the two organic options. Four foods received a ‘satisfactory’ rating, while one barely managed to pass with a ‘sufficient’ score.

The top contenders excelled in nutritional quality, with experts finding no significant issues regarding harmful substances. However, it is worth noting that some nutrient values measured slightly differed from what’s stated on the packaging. Additionally, traces of heavy metals were detected in all products tested.

Among the best performers, the 4Paws Sunny Hills Premium Softchunks Chicken stood out as the top food option. This winning product is available at various retailers, including Budni and Edeka.

Other commendable options can be found at Kaufland, Lidl, Rewe, Penny, and Zoo Royal.

Critical Insights on Dog Food Quality

Unfortunately, three dog foods did not meet the standards and were rated as ‘insufficient’ (grade 6). Two of these products exhibited elevated selenium levels, while one showed excessive zinc content. Additionally, the declared vitamin D3 levels in two cases varied significantly from the measurements taken in the lab, as did the crude fat content in two other samples.

One underperforming product is from Mars. The company has announced a recipe and packaging overhaul. The updated product can be recognized by its new packaging design and the new EAN 5900951315930, which has been on shelves since April. It is the Frolic Complete with poultry, vegetables, and rice. The packaging at the time of testing featured a red design with colorful text and a Dalmatian illustration on the right side. In the new version, the Dalmatian has been moved to the left-center of the package.

The Testing Process by ÖKO-TEST

A specialized laboratory conducted a thorough analysis of the dog food’s composition, measuring an array of minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamin D₃. The laboratory also screened for heavy metal contamination (lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury) but found no significant levels.

An expert from a university animal nutrition institute reviewed the vast data collected. They assessed whether the food adequately provides essential nutrients such as minerals, amino acids, protein, fatty acids, and vitamin D₃ without exceeding safe limits. This evaluation involved comparing laboratory findings with the minimum and maximum requirements set by the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF). Compliance with legal maximum levels was also examined. Furthermore, the expert referenced scientific literature concerning potential risks associated with nutrient overdoses and deficiencies. They confirmed whether the feeding guidelines on the packaging met FEDIAF recommendations and if the suggested amounts were appropriate.

The nutrient levels established in the laboratory were compared to the amounts indicated on the packaging to determine if any discrepancies fell within legal tolerances. ÖKO-TEST also scrutinized the environmental claims made on the packaging, ensuring that crucial information regarding food usage according to FEDIAF guidelines was clearly communicated.
