In response to the series of articles from DutyMaison Jean Lapointe, committed for decades to the prevention of addictions, wishes to reaffirm its firm support for the idea of reducing the legal blood alcohol limit while driving to 0.05. This measure, discussed for several years and adopted in numerous jurisdictions in Canada and internationally, represents an essential step forward for road safety in Quebec.
The opposition of Éduc’alcool, highlighted in the series of articles from Dutyforces us to react. It is concerning that an organization whose mission is to promote responsible alcohol consumption continues to oppose this. For nearly twenty years, despite scientific evidence and calls from speakers such as Jean-Marie De Koninck, founding president of Operation Red Nose, and former Minister of Transport Julie Boulet, Éduc’alcool remains an obstacle to this advanced.
However, the results in other provinces and countries clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of implementing administrative sanctions from 0.05. Research shows that an alcohol level of 0.05 already increases the risk of fatal accidents significantly, and this quadruples when the level reaches between 0.05 and 0.08.
Why ignore the evidence that shows that lowering the blood alcohol content to 0.05, as a stand-alone measure, has already contributed to a significant reduction in fatal crashes in other jurisdictions?
We believe that it is high time to overcome this resistance and adopt policies which, although perceived as restrictive by some, are necessary for the safety of all. The temporary suspension of the driving license in the event of exceeding the limit of 0.05 does not create serious harm for drivers, but encourages everyone to be more vigilant about their alcohol consumption before hitting the road. At La Maison Jean Lapointe, we are witnesses to the tragic consequences that drunk driving and risky drinking behaviors can have.
It is in Quebec that there is the most alcohol consumption, and it is the only province not to recognize the 0.05 measurement. The status quo is not an option. Every day that passes without this measure puts more lives at risk. We call on the government and citizens to act, not only to lower the legal limit to 0.05, but also to strengthen a culture of prevention and responsibility. The time has come to make Quebec a leader in road safety.
