The Obama couple’s support for Kamala Harris, and in particular a video featuring him, was mocked by the Republican camp. Is the support of the former president so important? On the set of American Hour, historians André Kaspi and Tristan Cabello and journalist Laurence Haïm debated it on Thursday October 10.
To show the Obama couple’s support for Kamala Harris, the Democratic camp staged a phone call. A video mocked by Donald Trump, then by a parody which shows an exchange of good manners between the Democratic candidate and the former president. André Kaspi, historian and specialist in the United States, doubts the scope of this communication. “I am not at all sure that Barack Obama’s influence will be decisive on the rest of the campaign”he says, convinced that it will convince “the convinced”.
For Tristan Cabello, historian specializing in the United States, lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, “this little parody puts a Stabilo shot (…) on the weaknesses of Kamala Harris which are seen as well in the Democratic camp as in the Republican camp”. According to journalist Laurence Haïm, the original video was “a communication error” from the Democratic camp, which “takes people for fools”. “Tonight, we will hear Barack Obama defend a certain vision of democracy threatened by populism, which for him is a symbol of Donald Trump”she adds.
