A Montérégie man accused of insulting a corpse

A 31-year-old man briefly appeared at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield courthouse on Friday to answer one count of indignity to a corpse.

Nicholas Gravel, residing in Hemmingford, in Montérégie, was charged under section 182 (b) of the Canadian Criminal Code, which condemns “any outrage, indecency or indignity towards a human corpse or human remains, whether buried or not” . The alleged acts occurred between September 15 and 21, according to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions.

Under a publication ban, the identity of the victim cannot be revealed at this time.

The case will return to court on October 2. The defendant remains detained at this time.

Mr. Gravel had been arrested the day before by the Sûreté du Québec in connection with the disappearance of a young woman in the Hemmingford region. He had been met by investigators in order to clarify “what his involvement could be or not in the case”, indicates a police press release.
