The visionary composer SOPHIE has passed through the pop firmament like a shooting star. Pioneer of hyperpop whose influence can still be heard today in the production of Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek (and, here, BéLi), her accidental death in 2021, after she had only launched ‘only one album, shocked his fans. Led by his brother, the posthumous album will not be entirely foreign to them: several of its songs have found their way on the Web in recent years. Which means that the avant-garde ideas she proposed sound a bit warmed up today, moreover polished, flattened into overly house-dance rhythms. The whole thing lacks this taste for risk, these meticulous and abrasive productions which made his only album so unique, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides (2018) — we will find some fragments in Berlin Nightmare And Gallop (with Evita Manji), in the frenzy ofElegance (with Popstar). A bittersweet record that makes us regret the absence of this unique musical head.
