Motion of censure | Trudeau government survives first test

(Ottawa) The Conservative Party failed to topple the Liberal government on Wednesday. However, it will soon return to the fray with another motion of censure.

The Liberals were able to survive thanks to the support of the Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party (NDP), which had shown their colours last week.

The motion was therefore unsurprisingly defeated by a score of 211 to 120 votes.

Submitted the day before by Pierre Poilievre, it read as follows: “The House has no confidence in the Prime Minister and the government.”

When the result of the vote was announced, the Prime Minister was applauded by his MPs. Four more years! “, we heard from the liberal benches.

The Liberal government had placed on the agenda a vote on the ways and means motion on capital gains.

He had decided to make it a vote of confidence.

The Conservatives, however, blocked its submission using delaying tactics.

Last June, the New Democrats and the Bloc Québécois supported the government’s plan to increase the capital gains inclusion rate.

Another motion to be tabled on Thursday

The Conservative Party must do so again on Thursday by presenting one of the two motions of censure on the notice paper.

The first states that:

• “Given that the leader of the New Democratic Party said: ‘the Liberals are too weak, too selfish and too beholden to the interests of big business to fight for the people’, the House leader of the Bloc Québécois said: ‘We have seen excessive centralization. Unprecedented in history. This government, which has difficulty managing its own missions, was starting to get its paws into the jurisdictions of Quebec and the provinces’, the House declared that it has no confidence in the government.”

The second is as follows:

• “That, given that for the past nine years the government has doubled housing costs, taxed food, penalized working people and allowed crime to explode, and that it is the most centralist government in Canadian history, the House no longer has confidence in the government and instead offers Canadians the option of eliminating the tax, building housing, fixing the budget and stopping crime.”

The motion on which the official opposition will choose will be voted on Tuesday, 1^er october.

The Bloc Québécois also upped the ante on Wednesday by imposing an ultimatum on the Liberals.

Two leaders in difficulty

Prime Minister Trudeau welcomes French President Emmanuel Macron to Ottawa on Wednesday, who is also on a tightrope in his own country.

It was announced on Tuesday that a proposed resolution aimed at triggering impeachment proceedings against the head of the Élysée Palace would be studied on October 2 by the Laws Committee of the National Assembly.

The text has little chance of being adopted, according to Agence France-Presse.

President Macron makes a quick stop in Ottawa. In the evening, Justin Trudeau will hold an informal dinner in his honor.

The two men will be in Montreal on Thursday.
