Employees at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel went on a seven-day strike Wednesday morning as the hotel hosts athletes in the prestigious Presidents Cup golf tournament.
At 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, employees at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel began a seven-day strike as part of the coordinated hotel sector negotiations.
“It’s the host hotel of the Presidents Cup, where the players reside,” said Michel Valiquette, treasurer and representative of the hotel sector at the Fédération du commerce, affiliated with the CSN. “It has repercussions in several other hotels.”
The Presidents Cup takes place from September 24 to 29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. The event attracts thousands of tourists to the city’s hotels.
“If everyone wants to enjoy a quiet weekend, a fall season that promises to be very busy, now is the time to sort this out [négociation]-there,” Mr. Valiquette mentioned in an interview with The Press.
This 11e round of negotiations involves 30 hotel unions in the regions of Montreal, Quebec, Estrie and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. A first agreement in principle was reached on September 23 at the Hilton Hotel in Laval. Other agreements could be reached soon.
