A missile launch in the context of military rivalry between Beijing and Washington in the Pacific. China tested, on Wednesday, September 25, in the Pacific, an intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with a “dummy warhead”its Defense Ministry announced. Intercontinental ballistic missiles are among the most powerful weapons in the world and can carry devastating nuclear payloads.
No details were given on the location of the missile fall. The ministry also did not specify whether the projectile was launched from a submarine or from land. “The People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force successfully launched an intercontinental ballistic missile carrying a dummy training warhead into the Pacific Ocean at 08:44 (02:44 CET) on September 25. It accurately landed within the predetermined sea area.”the ministry simply stated.
“This missile launch is part of the Rocket Force’s annual routine training program. It is consistent with international law and practice and does not target any specific country or target,” the Chinese Defense Ministry said. The test comes as Beijing and Washington are engaged in an intense struggle for influence in the Pacific. The United States regularly sends warships to the South China Sea to thwart Beijing’s territorial claims, but also near Taiwan to support local leaders.
