The federal Conservatives tabled their motion of censure against the Trudeau government Tuesday morning. The attempt to bring down the government is expected to fail, however, since the Bloc Québécois and the New Democratic Party (NDP) have already announced that they will oppose it during the vote, scheduled for Wednesday.
For weeks, the Conservative leader has been promising to call “a carbon tax election” as soon as possible.
“The House has no confidence in the Prime Minister and the government,” the text of the motion reads.
The opposition parties’ refusal to support the Conservative motion virtually eliminates the possibility of an early federal election this week.
Last week, Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet indicated that his party “is not at the service of the Conservatives.”
The next federal election must take place no later than October 2025, but the scenario of an early election is more likely since the end of the support agreement between the Liberals and the NDP.
Further details will follow.
