A movement of “great resignation” is gaining momentum in the United States … and starts in France

The numbers give the spin. The most recent: 4.5 million employees who resigned during the month of November alone. In July four millions, in August 4.2 millions, in September 4.3 millions and in October 4.1 millions. These are record numbers, never reached since the US government had statistics on the subject. The phenomenon now has a name, “the great resignation “, in French “the great resignation”. Studies are devoted to it, we talk about it in the press, but also on social networks.

It was started by a young supermarket employee. Her name is Shana Blackwell and she announced over the speakers at her Walmart store that she was resigning. “I quit my job”, dhe tens of millions of views and a keyword picked up by a crowd of employees.

The service sector led the way. Hospitality, leisure: a million resignations in November alone. But the movement has spread to other professions, supermarket cashiers, nursing assistants, housekeepers … Some executives have followed, in particular to leave the big cities and settle inland. Even CEOs are starting to resign. A study showed that the number of resignations of Chiefs executive officers (CEOs), as they say there, skyrocketed in the first half of the year. As for the reasons which push them to leave, they relate to too low wages, the desire to have a better mutual and to have more flexibility. And employers, in desperate search of manpower, are obliged to follow suit.

In France, the movement is coming. According to a group of researchers from the EM Normandie management school. They note, for example, an increase in conventional ruptures. La Dares, the statistical body of the Ministry of Labor, does not say anything else: it has indeed observed a high level of resignations from permanent contracts over the past year. For Vincent Meyer, one of these researchers, the job market has turned around. It is easier to quit your job because you can find a new one more easily. Add to this a deep questioning on the meaning of his work and his life, nourished by the health crisis, and you have all the ferments of a “great resignation”, a great French resignation
