Laval will triple the number of Bixi stations on its territory by spring 2025, Stéphane Boyer’s administration announced Wednesday. Ten new stations will be installed shortly and 39 more will be added for the start of the next season.
The City of Laval has just awarded a $4 million private contract to Bixi to increase the fleet of self-service bicycles on its territory. The number of stations will increase from 26 to 75 and, ultimately, users will have access to 632 regular bicycles and 219 electric-assist bicycles.
“In response to the growing success of the service since its launch in 2019, the increase in the number of stations provides the Laval population with even more options for sustainable travel while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,” commented in a press release the councilor responsible for active mobility on the Laval executive committee, Vasilios Karidogiannis.
The City emphasizes that the project is financed in part with financial assistance from Quebec through the Financial Assistance Program for the Development of Active Transportation in Urban Perimeters (TAPU) from the 2030 Green Economy Plan. This financial support represents an investment of $1.9 million, it is specified.
In Laval, the Bixi season will end in mid-November and activities will resume next spring. In Montreal, the Bixi service is now available year-round following a successful pilot project last winter.
