A teacher who appeared in a video assaulting a three-year-old student at a school in Paris has been suspended, BFMTV announced on Tuesday, September 10.the rector of Paris, Bernard Beignier. “There will be a criminal investigation since a complaint has been filed, an administrative investigation could very certainly lead to a disciplinary council and there we have to sort out all the facts that occurred”explained the rector.
The resigning Minister of National Education, Nicole Belloubet, had requested the opening of disciplinary proceedings “without delay” and the “immediate suspension”. She had also denounced “terribly shocking images”.
On Monday, a video recorded by a parent present in the classroom showing a teacher violently hitting a crying student in the back at a nursery school in the 15th arrondissement of Paris circulated on social media. The incident allegedly occurred on September 3.
Vanessa Edberg, the family’s lawyer, confirmed to AFP that she had filed a complaint on September 5 at a police station in Hauts-de-Seine to denounce violence aggravated by three circumstances: against a vulnerable person, in a school establishment and perpetrated by a person carrying out a public service mission. According to her, the three-year-old girl was starting her first school year in the nursery section and “had already been beaten in the previous days, which she had told her mother.”
“The video was filmed while there was another mother present, we can see that the teacher is holding back”the lawyer lamented. “The girl has already seen a doctor, and will see another one to assess her temporary disability. The first doctor assessed her psychological damage as severe, because the girl does not look others in the eye or face to face and refuses to talk about the teacher.”according to Mr. Edberg. Asked by franceinfo, the Paris prosecutor’s office indicated that it had not yet received the complaint.
