At least three people died in an Israeli airstrike on a school serving as a shelter for displaced people, the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip said on Saturday, September 7. “Three martyrs and more than 20 wounded were rescued after an Israeli warplane fired two missiles at a prayer hall and a classroom of Amr Ibn al-Aas school, where displaced people had taken refuge in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in northern Gaza City.”Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for Civil Defense, told AFP.

The Israeli army, for its part, declared that it had struck a command center of the Palestinian Hamas. It targeted “terrorists who were operating inside a Hamas command and control center (…) located in a compound that previously served as a school”she said in a statement.

In recent months, Israeli forces have struck several schools sheltering displaced Palestinians, often in Gaza City, claiming the bombings targeted Hamas militants. Tens of thousands of displaced people have sought shelter in schools in the besieged Palestinian territory since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, sparked by an unprecedented attack by the Islamist movement inside Israel.
