Presented out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, Wolfsby Jon Watts, stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt as lone wolves who are about to spend a wild night together, against their will.
Written and directed by Jon Watts (the Spider-Man franchise with Tom Holland), Wolfs brings together on the big screen for the fifth time Brad Pitt and George Clooney, also producers of the film, after the trilogy Oceanby Steven Soderbergh, and Burn After Readingby Ethan and Joel Coen.
” In Burn After Reading“I had the pleasure of shooting Brad in the face, so I thought in this movie I could do it again,” said George Clooney, 63, after helping Brad Pitt sit up as if he were too old to do it – he turns 61 in December.
“You punched me in the face, but it was cut,” Pitt said. “Yeah, it was in my contract,” replied George Clooney, who would later say it’s great that Pitt is still working at 74. In short, there was a genuine camaraderie at the press conference Sunday afternoon, where Jon Watts was conspicuous by his absence. “He got to Venice, and then he got COVID,” Clooney announced.

À peine le nettoyeur (George Clooney), habitué à travailler seul, commence-t-il le boulot qu’un second loup solitaire (Brad Pitt) se pointe sur les lieux.
Jon est arrivé avec cette idée de scénario très plaisante. En vieillissant, je veux travailler avec des gens avec qui j’ai envie de passer du temps ; c’est important. Pour moi, produire et jouer, c’est le même sport. L’idée, c’est de raconter de bonnes histoires, des histoires universelles, accessibles à tous, qui parlent de notre époque.

« Je suis beaucoup plus jeune que Brad, mais je sais que ça ne paraît pas, a encore blagué George Clooney. Comme nous sommes aussi producteurs, nous recevons des tas de scripts. Quand on a reçu celui-là, on s’est dit qu’on pourrait y jouer. Si j’écris et si je produis, c’est pour avoir plus d’occasions de travailler dans le milieu du cinéma. Je n’avais pas joué depuis longtemps ; pour moi, le jeu, c’est la cerise sur le gâteau. »
Complicité à l’écran comme dans la vie
Sans surprise, la mésentente règne immédiatement entre les deux hommes. Un coup de fil de la gérante de l’hôtel (voix de Frances McDormand) leur annonce qu’ils devront faire équipe ensemble. Leur mission se complique bientôt lorsqu’ils découvrent le contenu du sac à dos du jeune homme. Et que ce dernier revient miraculeusement d’entre les morts.
D’entrée de jeu, la chimie est palpable entre les acteurs. Les répliques fusent avec tant de naturel et à une telle vitesse qu’un journaliste a demandé s’il y avait eu une part d’improvisation. « Jon Watts est très spécifique, mais il nous laisse de la place pour jouer. C’est un scénario fantastique, un thriller drôle, génial. En plus, j’ai eu le plaisir de jouer avec ces deux gentlemen et Austin, qui a passé deux semaines étendu face contre le sol en caleçon », a répondu Amy Ryan.
Il faut du rythme quand vient le temps de parler l’un par-dessus l’autre, mais dès que j’ai lu le scénario, je savais que Brad [Pitt] and I would have an easy time doing it.

“The one who had the hardest job was Austin, who has a two-page monologue,” Clooney continued. “Plus, he runs around the streets of New York in his underwear,” Pitt added.

“George and Brad were very generous, very caring,” the young actor revealed. “You had to be good, or you would have been hit with a lamp,” Clooney said, referring to an interrogation scene. “They were very attentive, too…” Abrams continued. “What are you talking about? I wasn’t listening!” Clooney replied.
Like the two actors in real life, their characters have back pain, get out of breath when running, have to wear glasses to read a message on a pager, and make jokes about their age. For his part, Austin Abrams’ character comments on the fact that the two cleaners have the same style, the same coolness.
“Clearly, we decline; the movie is meta. Besides, when Jon sent us the script, he didn’t indicate who was playing who. We knew from that point on that it would be fun to do. I didn’t ask him, but I’m sure Jon was inspired by Harvey Keitel’s cleaner [Point of No Return, Pulp Fiction] ” said George Clooney.
“The best compliment you can receive is to compare Wolfs to a 1970s film, Brad Pitt said after a journalist’s remark. For us, those were the best years in terms of cinema. Those years are written in our DNA and as soon as we can get close to them, we do it. It’s organic. I really like streaming because it allows more people to work, especially young actors like Austin, who represents the next generation, but as a producer, maybe I’m a romantic, it’s important to make cinema for the theaters.”
Finally, the opinion letter published by George Clooney in the New York Timeswhere he called for Joe Biden’s resignation, came to the fore: “It’s not me who should be applauded, but the most selfless act ever made by a president. I’m proud of where we are right now and excited about the future.”
Wolfs will be released in theaters on September 20.
