Victoria Bridge closed towards Montreal for an indefinite period

The Victoria Bridge is closed to traffic towards Montreal on Friday afternoon following emergency work carried out on the structure of the bridge.

The Quebec Ministry of Transport indicated via its Quebec 511 account on the X network that emergency inspection work was necessary after a heavy vehicle passed through the eastern span of the bridge, heading towards Montreal.

“On Friday morning, a commercial truck, exceeding the authorized weight limit, crossed the Victoria Bridge. The truck was intercepted by police and CN closed the bridge for an emergency inspection,” CN Rail said in a statement. Duty Ashley Michnowski, a spokeswoman for Canadian National, which owns the Victoria Bridge.

It is not yet known how long the closure will last or the extent of the work required.

CN assures that its teams are “working as quickly as possible to complete the inspection in order to reopen the Victoria Bridge for the evening rush hour.”

Connecting Montreal to Saint-Lambert, on the South Shore, the Victoria Bridge was inaugurated in 1860.
