During a traffic check on the A8 motorway on Monday 26 August near Mougins in the Alpes-Maritimes, a motorist fatally injured a police officer before fleeing.

In the courtyard of the gendarmerie, investigators inspect the BMW that allegedly hit a gendarme in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes) during a road check on Monday, August 26. The very violent collision took place on the exit ramp of the A8 motorway, around 8:35 p.m. during a routine road check carried out by four gendarmes. A motorist refused to stop, mowing down one of the soldiers who died on the spot. Around 4 a.m., the search was narrowed in the city center of Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes), where the suspect was arrested in the street.

The 39-year-old man is a Cape Verdean with legal status. He is already known for insults and also for hit and run. His blood alcohol level was positive. In the ranks of the police, the increase in refusals to comply is denounced. Emotions were high on Tuesday, August 27, the day after the death of the 54-year-old gendarme who was about to retire and the father of two teenagers. “He was the oldest of us all”laments one of his colleagues. The courts have described Eric Comyn’s death as the murder of a person in a position of public authority.
