The UN has again called on the United States to close the Guantanamo prison, which still has 39 prisoners. The prison opened after the September 11 attacks, with the objective of accommodating terrorists, detained and mistreated 780 prisoners.

In photos of Guantanamo prison, prisoners can be seen handcuffed at their ankles, wrists, and locked in a cage. The prison which held 780 prisoners in 2002 only holds 39. The UN accuses the United States of practicing torture on prisoners of Guantanamo to obtain information. The prison director denies these accusations. “There is no debate, here we stick to a humane and safe detention. And we will continue like this”, he said.

For the United States, it is legally difficult to close the Guantanamo prison. The American state fears being made an accomplice in torture if the detainees are tried in the country. During his mandate, Barack Obama had already tried to close the Cuban prison, in vain. Joe Biden recently announced that he wanted to end this system of detention.
