David Crosby, before the Byrds took off, was already soaring: John Coltrane here, Ravi Shankar there. George Martin, leader ” artist&repertoire » at Parlophone, fed on Ravel, Debussy and company well before discovering the Beatles. The McCartney of the said group, who was staying with the Ashers (invited by his sweetheart Jane and his brother, Peter), took advantage of this first London pied-à-terre to go through the 33 rpm records of the family hi-fi system, a rich and diversified collection: Stockausen, Varèse, Satie and much more. Thus, the little curious ones of popular music about to conquer the world educated themselves, influencing each other, and drawing inspiration for their own creations. We had the brilliant idea, at Cherry Red Records, to reconstitute a sort of ideal discotheque of this music from elsewhere: three full records of Mingus, Sun Ra and his Arkestra, Django Reinhardt, Pierre Boulez, John Cage, and even spoken wordfrom the beat poetry of Allen Ginsberg to the premonitions of Aldous Huxley. The table of sixties has never looked so good.
