NHL | Oilers make two trades in short time

(Edmonton) New Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman was busy Sunday night as he made two trades.

First, he acquired forward Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks.

In return, the Alberta team gave up the Ottawa Senators’ fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft.

Podkolzin had 18 goals and 17 assists in 37 games during his three seasons with the Canucks.

The 23-year-old Russian made his playoff debut this year when he played two games against the Oilers in the second round.

Podkolzin was drafted in 10th placee ranked by the Canucks in 2019.

The Oilers acquired the Senators’ fourth-round pick and forward Roby Jarventie last July in exchange for forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson.

With this trade, the Canucks now have seven selections for the 2025 draft.

Cody Ceci heads to San Jose

Bowman later traded defenseman Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick to the San Jose Sharks for defenseman Ty Emberson.

Ceci spent the last three seasons with the Oilers. He had 25 points, including five goals, in 79 games last season. The 30-year-old rearguard added two goals and three assists in 24 playoff games.

Emberson had one goal and nine assists in 30 games with the Sharks last season.

The 24-year-old American was drafted in the third round by the Arizona Coyotes in 2018.

The Blues are waiting

These two trades by the Oilers come as the St. Louis Blues are still waiting to find out whether or not the Alberta team will match their hostile offers.

Last Tuesday, the Blues offered $4.58 million per season to defenseman Philip Broberg and $2.29 million per campaign to forward Dylan Holloway. In both cases, these are two-year contracts.

The Oilers have seven days to match those offers. If they don’t, they’ll receive a second-round pick for Broberg and a third-round pick for Holloway.
