“Surf Beat!”, Various Artists

Question of angle, on the surfboard. Under the banner of Bear Family, since 1975, a band of Teutons have been competing in expertise in all that is pioneering popular music. Exhaustive box sets, essential summaries, they do everything with the same concern to understand while enjoying. For this compilation of surf-rock, they are perfectly balanced on the crest of the wave: without bypassing the mythical recordings of Duane Eddy, Dick Dale and other Ventures, the 33 tracks gleaned here go beyond the commonplaces of the eternal Californian summer of muscular beach boys and necessarily blonde girls. Surfing is first and foremost a matter of pleasure and danger, on the fringes. When the Centurions play their Bullwinkle Part 2it’s in honor of a delinquent cartoon. When the Raiders, along with Tommy Alsup, Buddy Holly’s former guitar-playing buddy, capture Dardanellatheir rock’n’roll invades the lands, pedal steel as a locomotive. The Rumble Bee New Dimensions is a Bumble Bee dirty on purpose. Until Jan & Dean yell furiously instead of singing in harmony: Something a Little Bit Differentnothing less. Not one of the 75 minutes is repetitive, all these guitars stand out. Only the attitude unites. The watchword: do not conform.
