(Edmonton) AutoCanada said it has discovered a security breach in its systems that could disrupt operations. The company reported a financial loss for the second quarter due to a separate cybersecurity incident.
The Edmonton-based dealership network says it is still working to understand the extent of the breach, which occurred on Aug. 11, including what customer, supplier or employee data may have been compromised.
AutoCanada, which has 84 franchised dealerships across North America, says its businesses remain open as it continues to investigate and work to contain and remediate the breach.
The breach follows a cyberattack in June against CDK Global, a company that provides software to thousands of auto dealerships in the United States and Canada, that caused major disruptions.
AutoCanada says the breach that affected CDK contributed to a net loss of $33.1 million for the quarter ended June 30, compared with a profit of $45.2 million for the same quarter last year.
The company says the CDK outage lasted from June 19 to June 1er July, but it took until late July for the software to function normally again, resulting in lost sales and other costs for AutoCanada.
