Canadian Philip Kim, nicknamed Phil Wizard, won the gold medal in the men’s breaking event at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.
Kim beat Frenchman Danis Civil, known as Dany Dann, 3-0 in the final, receiving 23 of the 27 votes.
The 27-year-old British Columbian defeated Dany Dann 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match.
This is Canada’s first gold medal – and history – in breaking, which was making its Olympic debut in Paris. The discipline will not return to the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
Kim reached the final in breaking, defeating Japan’s Shigeyuki Nakaraj (Shigekix) 3-0 in the semi-finals and Dutchman Lee-Lou Diouf Demierre, nicknamed Lee, in the quarter-finals.
Nakaraj lost to American Victor Montalvo (Victor) in the bronze medal match.
The Canadian started the tournament by winning all three of his matches to finish at the top of his group.
Kim dominated his third match by a score of 2-0, receiving 17 of the 18 votes against Australia’s Jeff Dunne, known as J Attack.
Vancouver’s “B-Boy” split the rounds 1-1 in his second matchup, against Ukraine’s Oleh Kuznetsov (Kuzya), but he triumphed 10-8 in the votes.
