With a try from Antoine Dupont, the French rugby sevens team won its quarter-final 26 to 14 on Thursday against Argentina. It thus qualified for the last four of the Olympic tournament.
This is a historic qualification. The French rugby 7s have never managed to get past the quarter-final stage of the Olympic tournament. It is now a done deal: the French team has reached the semi-finals thanks to a 26-14 victory against the Argentinians. As usual since the start of the tournament, the French team made a remarkable start. After scoring three tries, one by Andy Timo, then a double by Aaron Grandidier, all three converted, the Blues created a significant gap before half-time.
After the break, the French team lurched heavily, but did not capsize. The Argentinians, much more precise than in the first half, moved forward again with tries from Rodrigo Isgro and Marcos Moneta. But, as if symbolically, Antoine Dupont secured victory in the final seconds. The French team won their match 26 to 14 against the Argentinians. The Blues will challenge South Africa at the Stade de France, Saturday July 27 at 3:30 p.m., for a place in the final.
