Migrant dies in boat sinking while trying to cross the Channel

There are 71 other people who have been rescued, the maritime prefecture said.

A migrant died on Wednesday July 17 in the sinking of a boat in the Channel, off Gravelines (North), the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea indicated in a press release which specifies that 71 other people were rescued.

Wednesday, at the end of the day, “The public service patrol boat Cormoran, hired by the CROSS Gris-Nez to patrol off the coast of Gravelines, indicates that the tubes of a migrant boat near it have just deflated, that people are in the water and that it is immediately coming to their aid”explains the maritime prefecture. At the same time, two helicopters, an airplane and several nautical resources are engaged to provide assistance to the shipwrecked.

All those rescued were dropped off at the quayside in Calais early in the night and taken care of by the rescue services on land.
