The approximately 5,800 members of the Association of Provincial Police Officers of Quebec (APPQ) voted overwhelmingly in favour of the agreement in principle reached with their employer, the Sûreté du Québec.
Nearly nine out of 10 members spoke out, and 70% of them supported the terms of the new employment contract.
“We have worked diligently and with determination to present our members with an agreement that will enhance and better recognize the unique status of police officers working within the Sûreté du Québec,” said Jacques Painchaud, president of the APPQ, in a press release.
The previous collective agreement expired in March 2022. Last September, a first agreement was rejected by nearly 60% of APPQ members. This agreement included salary increases of 21% over five years.
Both sides turned to conciliation. A proposed settlement hypothesis served as a draft of the agreement that was voted on.
“The salary increases provide essential catch-up and are accompanied by an improvement in working conditions. This is what our members wanted,” recalls Mr. Painchaud.
For its part, the employer obtains more flexibility from its police officers, which will allow it to provide better service to the population.
The new employment contract is for a period of six years.
