A person was found dead Sunday morning at the scene of a fire in an apartment in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough in Montreal.

The police were called to the scene of the incident around 5:30 a.m. on Papineau Avenue, near Bélanger Street. The fairly minor blaze was quickly brought under control. The individual was declared dead on the spot.
“Several people were evacuated in a preventive manner, but no one else was injured and everyone was able to return to their accommodation,” added the spokesperson for the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), Véronique Comtois.
As one person died at the scene of the event, the event file was transferred to the arson section of the SPVM. An investigator will visit the site to understand the circumstances of the event.
