French legislative elections | The clash of the blocs

Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), which just a few days ago said it was in a position to obtain a majority in the National Assembly, had to swallow its ambitions following the second round of the French legislative elections.

While polls almost unanimously predicted that the far-right party would win the most seats, it was overtaken on Sunday by the left-wing parties united within the New Popular Front (NFP) as well as by the centrist coalition loyal to President Emmanuel Macron.

The official results from the Interior Minister indicate that the NFP won 182 seats, the centrist camp 168 and the RN 143.

None of the three blocs was able to secure the 289 seats required for an absolute majority, opening the door to intense political negotiations to try to lay the foundations of a stable government.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the radical left-wing La France Insoumise party, said the result was a “huge relief” for the country and rushed to demand that President Macron appoint a prime minister from the ranks of the NFP.
