After more than two years of negotiations, the Quebec government has agreed on a new employment contract with the Sûreté du Québec police officers. The Association des policières et policiers politiques politiques politiques provincials du Québec (APPQ) announced Friday that it had reached an agreement in principle with Quebec.
The agreement, which still needs to be approved by APPQ members, would last six years. It would allow “the unique status of police officers working within the national police force to be enhanced and better recognized,” according to a press release issued by the union.
Last May, both parties asked the Ministry of Labour to appoint a special conciliator to help unblock negotiations. The 5,700 SQ agents had been without a work contract since March 2022.
A first agreement in principle, which included salary increases of 21% over five years, was concluded in July 2023. It was subsequently rejected by APPQ members by a vote of 59.38%.
The details of the new agreement remain confidential for the moment, until the members of the APPQ have voted on this new employment contract.
