At work, in a bar and on dating applications: these are the places where French people under 30 meet their romantic partners, according to a study on the emotional lives of 18-30 year olds in 2023, from the National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED), published Wednesday June 19. Apps only come in third place, having helped 11% of couples form. Marriage agencies are delighted, because they are thus recovering part of their clientele.

“The people who contacted me had serious problems with the applications. Their bank accounts were emptied, they had nervous breakdowns…”, exclaims Françoise Afchain, head of the Synthese agency in Neuilly-sur-Seine. In 35 years of experience, she has supported more than 200 people.

The manager recognizes that the objectives are not the same when you go to Tinder, Happn, Bumble or when you use its services. “People come a little less spontaneously. But those who are really motivated to get married come back to us,” she rejoices.

From his office, in the Gare de Lyon district of Paris, Laurent Charbit, Unicis agency manager, observes this same phenomenon. He had lost part of his clientele with the rise of the Internet, but it is coming back.

“75% of our members have used dating applications. This means that we generally get those disappointed with dating applications, rather young people, from 25 years old, who want to get married or have children “, explains the marriage agent. In his office, that represents 20 to 30% more clients.

This clientele is still quite wealthy. You have to pay around 2,000 euros to benefit from its services and find love. But the matchmaker is delighted with the success of the agency: seven out of ten people have formed a relationship thanks to him.
