A pedestrian succumbed to his injuries after being struck by a van a few steps from a hospital in Rivière-Rouge, in the Hautes-Laurentides, on Friday.
The sun had barely set for an hour when the accident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. on L’Annunciation Street North in the town of Rivière-Rouge on Friday. A section of this street is lit only at intersections and has no sidewalks, according to information from the Sûreté du Québec.
A pickup truck driving north collided with a man in his 60s who was walking in the same direction. The driver immediately assisted the injured, along with another passerby. The accident occurred about 550 meters from the Rivière-Rouge Service Center hospital.
The injured, a resident of the region, was taken to hospital in critical condition and ultimately lost his life, announced Sergeant Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec. Alcohol was not involved in the accident, she also added.
A collision scene investigator attended. The road was closed for the duration of the investigation.
