As it did in recent years, the Legault government announced Friday that it would limit the increase in school taxes to an average of 3%.
Quebec is also committed to paying the shortfall to school service centers, which amounts to $150 million.
The school tax rate will increase from $0.09730 to $0.09152 per $100 of assessment, the government said in a press release.
For example, an average tax bill of $355 will increase by $10 next year. According to Quebec, if it had not acted, the amount would have jumped by $54.
The Legault government recalls that it pays $1.8 billion each year to school service centers to limit the increase for Quebecers and keep the school tax uniform throughout Quebec.
“While offering a little respite to families, we are ensuring that we provide school service centers with the financial resources necessary to offer the services that will allow students to fully flourish,” underlined the Minister of Education, Bernard. Drainville.
During the 2022 elections, François Legault’s Coalition Avenir Québec promised to limit the increase in government rates to 3% for its entire mandate.
Thus, the Minister of Finance, Eric Girard, had the government’s very first bill adopted to limit certain prices, including driving licenses, registration and daycare prices, until December 2026.
The Legault government also acted to limit the school tax in 2022 and 2023.
