The French president arrives in Italy on Thursday June 13, where the G7 summit opens, this is his first international trip since the dissolution. “His interlocutors follow what is happening”but Emmanuel Macron still appears as “the head of state of France, nothing more, nothing less”, assures historian Marc Lazar, professor of history and sociology at Luiss University in Rome. Even if France is “a little weakened” because of “the political uncertainty which will reign until July 7”until the outcome of the legislative elections, “the fact remains that the President of the Republic is an international leader, due to France’s position, and that he will certainly have things to present (…) qwhat we will remember for this G7″.

This summit remains a meeting of heads of state, recalls Marc Lazar. On the subject of Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron remains fully in a position to make commitments. According to Marc Lazar, “he continues to be the head of foreign policy”. The specialist recalls that Jacques Chirac, who experienced a situation of cohabitation between 1997 and 2002, “that did not prevent him from being very active for the Treaty of Nice, which was very important for the European Union”. So, “whatever the choice of the Prime Minister”the historian assures that, even if it is not enshrined in the Constitution, by a “French tradition”, “foreign policy is what we call the ‘reserved domain’ of the President of the Republic”.

The fact remains that the organizer of this G7, Georgia Meloni, was reinforced by a very good result in the European elections “will try to play a bit more of a role, certainly”. Especially since German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and American President Joe Biden are also in a “difficult or dangerous situation” in their respective countries. But “France remains France”summarizes the historian, “one of the most important countries in the European Union”with a Franco-German relationship “fundamental”which remains a “engine” for the fate of Europe.
