The vehicle which sank in the Rivière des Prairies early Sunday morning in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville was recovered, but the driver remains untraceable.
According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling northbound on Saint-Hubert Street around 4:45 a.m. when it plunged into the river.
A man was seen in the water near the car, said Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson for the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM).
A vast rescue operation was launched to find the occupant(s) of the vehicle.
At the beginning of the afternoon, police divers located the vehicle and then removed it from the water.
Responders from the Canadian Coast Guard are also participating in the search.
