They will have to take their troubles patiently. More than 80,000 tourists are stuck on Hainan Island in southern China after cases of Covid-19 were detected that prompted authorities to cancel all flights and trains locally. In total, 483 cases have been reported in the seaside city of Sanya, which has more than one million inhabitants. Tourists wishing to leave the island must present five negative PCR tests in the last seven days.

While hotels in the city are to offer guests a 50% discount until travel restrictions are lifted, public entertainment venues like spas, karaoke bars and bars have been closed for several days.

China is the only major economy that continues to apply a zero Covid strategy: it imposes confinements and long quarantines which penalize local tourism. The country’s borders have been almost completely closed since the beginning of 2020, preventing foreign visitors from entering the country.
