A shipwreck near Calais (Pas-de-Calais) caused the death of 31 migrants on Wednesday, November 24. The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, went there.
On Wednesday 24 November, the authorities are getting organized in the port of Calais (Pas-de-Calais). An exceptional rescue system was put in place, the police and emergency services were mobilized. A shipwreck took place in the afternoon and it is the deadliest in history in the Channel with 31 migrants dead, including five women and a little girl. “Today, it is a human drama which I attend”, declares the mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart.
The emergency services took charge of the bodies of the victims, they also took the injured to hospital. The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, visited the site in the evening. He felt that “the first responsible for this despicable situation are the smugglers, that is to say the criminals who, for a few thousand euros, organize human trafficking”. The police arrested four smugglers suspected of having organized the passage of migrants to England.
