‘The Penguin’ is shaping up to be another standout series from HBO.

Before Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga teamed up in Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, and following the launch of ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ on Prime Video, we were drawn back into Matt Reeves’ dark rendition of Gotham City with ‘The Penguin’, a fresh original series from HBO and Max.

Set directly after the events of ‘The Batman’, this eight-part series furthers Reeves’ ‘Batman Epic Crime Saga’, by spotlighting Colin Farrell’s character, a secondary antagonist.

Prior to its premiere, Malcolm McMillan, a fellow writer at TG, previewed the DC series and proclaimed ‘The Penguin’ a ‘must-watch’ and one of the year’s finest shows to date.

He notably commended the series for being fundamentally a crime narrative that steps away from our heroic figure in favor of exploring Gotham’s criminal underbelly, all while incorporating numerous hidden nods. He highlighted Cristin Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone as the show’s shining performance.

As we reach the concluding chapters of Oz Cobb’s crime storyline, it continues to captivate audiences. Below, you’ll find all the vital information regarding ‘The Penguin’.

‘The Penguin’ Plot: What’s the Show About?

‘The Penguin’ revolves around Farrell’s aspiring crime lord. Following the collapse of Gotham’s seawall, Oz embarks on a quest to seize the power left by Carmine Falcone’s death, aiming to provide for his mother, Francis (Deirdre O’Connell), as he had promised.

However, he faces challenges from Carmine’s children, Sofia and Alberto, as well as the Maroni family, while grappling with the negative label of ‘the Penguin’ that haunts him.

In an interview with Variety back in 2022, Sarah Aubrey, Head of Originals at Max, shared insights into the show’s concept: ‘The goal is to depict Oz’s existence on the streets of Gotham, as he maneuvers to rise as only the Penguin can, as a hustler with strategic ambitions.’ Aubrey elaborated, ‘This series exemplifies the opportunity to craft a character arc over eight episodes filled with intriguing twists, turns, and new characters. It focuses on street-level narratives since he’s not soaring through the skies like Batman. This distinct experience is something we are committed to offering our audience.’
