Ambush by Ukrainian Commandos Claims Russian Soldiers

In a striking operation, Ukrainian commandos reportedly eliminated 17 Russian soldiers and captured around a dozen more during a special forces ambush. This audacious raid unfolded in the Kursk region, where Kyiv continues to hold significant territory gained during its bold invasion efforts. Footage released by the Ukrainian armed forces shows troops maneuvering through dense woodland while engaging presumed Russian targets.

Details of the Operation and Ongoing Conflict

An intense exchange of gunfire erupted in the forest, culminating in Russian captives emerging from a bunker to surrender. These prisoners were seen kneeling beside a forest path in the combat zone and are believed to be part of the Russian 810th Marine Brigade. The Naval Special Operations Center, part of Kyiv’s 73rd Brigade, along with troops from the 6th Ranger Regiment, claimed responsibility for the operation, stating they had neutralized 17 enemy combatants and taken 12 captives. The special forces reported, « Our troops infiltrated Russian positions and captured 12 soldiers. »

This ambush occurred following Ukrainian advances during a counter-offensive near Korenevo in the Kursk area. In August, Ukraine had successfully captured substantial parts of Kursk during a surprise invasion. However, Russia has since regained much of the territory it lost, supported by approximately 11,000 North Korean troops. Following these developments, Vladimir Putin appointed the prominent deputy Alexander Khinshtein as the interim governor of Kursk, acknowledging the necessity for « crisis management » in the region.

November marked a devastating month for Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, facing nearly 46,000 troop losses, with British intelligence reporting an average daily casualty rate of 1,523 Russian soldiers. The worst single day for Russian forces was recorded on November 28, with 2,030 losses, marking the first instance of over 2,000 Russian casualties in a single day. A ‘loss’ in this context refers to a soldier being killed or severely injured and rendered incapable of combat.

Despite the catastrophic toll on his military, Putin shows little inclination to withdraw or consolidate his fronts. Instead, he pursues advances in multiple areas, including Kursk, Kupiansk, and Toretsk, in his relentless quest for territorial expansion. The steady progress of his forces comes at a staggering cost to the Russian populace. Additionally, plans for new offensives in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions are underway, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to expanding his influence, regardless of the horrific casualty rates.

There is currently no indication that Putin intends to slow down; British intelligence predicts that Russian losses will remain above 1,000 per day well into December 2024, even with the onset of winter. While Ukraine continues to lose ground on several fronts, its forces manage to hold onto parts of the Kursk region captured in August. Experts suggest that Ukraine will adopt a defensive stance throughout the winter, at least until the inauguration of Donald Trump in January, which could bring about a clearer situation.

Upon taking office, Trump is expected to unveil a plan aimed at swiftly resolving the conflict in Ukraine, a strategy he has been developing behind the scenes. He has consistently promised to bring peace to the region « within 24 hours, » during his campaign. Elements of this plan have surfaced, indicating Trump’s intention to leverage military support for Ukraine as a means to coax belligerent leaders back to the negotiating table. Should the aggressive Russian regime continue its land grabs and refuse to engage in peace talks, Trump would retaliate by increasing military funding for Ukraine.
